Swine Flu Vaccination...Yes, Please!
For weeks we have pondered on the question “to vaccinate or not vaccinate”. About a month ago when I was leaning towards “no” but was still straddling the fence. So, one night I had a great idea to ask Bryan his thoughts on it. He very quickly answered NO. At that time we did not feel like there was a consistent answer among doctors, mainly pediatricians. However, in the last couple of weeks and polling several “doctor friends” and our pediatrician we decided to go ahead with getting Deacon the swine flu H1N1 vaccination. The chances of him getting swine flu H1N1 are very good and with Deacon’s history, I just knew he would end up with it. The thing in question was how bad would it be? I just knew that I would never forgive myself if we decided against the vaccination and he had a bad case of it. Like I said after a lot of questioning different doctors we decided it was the lesser of two evils.

The only problem was…they were impossible to find. Then the state health department announced these mass flu shot clinics, where they would have the swine flu H1N1 vaccination. It just happened to work out that the one in our county happened to be on a Friday, my day off, …perfect!

So, Deacon and I woke up at 6:30, threw on some clothes and a hat for me, so I didn’t have to do my hair, and headed out about 7:00 with high hopes of being towards the front of the line. Well, obviously we weren’t the only ones with these plans. We ended up standing in the rain for about an hour. After we got inside we were handed a number and told to have a seat. Once our number was called they checked our paper work and sent us to another line to stand in. Wow, organized chaos! Thankfully we happened to run into a friend who was getting the same shot as Deacon. We were able to stay together the whole and catch up on a lot of talking.

About 10:15 we were finally leaving! Deacon had received his shot and I got the regular flu shot. Deacon did great through the whole thing. And when it came time for his shot he cried for maybe 10 seconds. However, when I sat him on my lap to get his shot there were some other kids near us crying and Deacon was imitating and laughing. I think when he is older we may need to work on that, but it was kinda funny at the time. I am very, very thankful for all of those volunteers who worked the clinics today.

Deacon was so exhausted that he fell asleep on the way home. When we got home we put on some warm, comfy sweatpants and snuggled on the couch to get warmed up.

Needless to say, we are both very happy that is over with.

Unfortunately, he has to have a second dose. So in about 4 weeks we will probably be going through the whole process all over again, but I haven’t told him that yet.

Painting Pumpkins
I had the great idea that we needed to do some festive projects since this is Deacon’s first Halloween that he can kinda partake in. Remember this little stinker from last year, he didn’t do a whole lot other than look cute. But this year I wanted to get us all in the Halloween spirit so Friday I decided to buy some pumpkins. I bought one big one for Bryan to carve (since he doesn’t trust me with a knife) and 3 little ones for Deacon to paint. Yes,
I know I am crazy for buying a one year old paint.

I had this idea that he was going to love it, but I don’t think he was quite as excited as I was. But nonetheless, he painted a pumpkin.

His favorite part was dipping the paint brush in the paint.

I think he did a pretty good job.

Next, we got the big pumpkin ready for Bryan to carve.

I think Deacon enjoyed this a bit more.

Mostly because he liked throwing the seeds.

I gave him a bath while Bryan carved the pumpkin and when it was done Deacon loved it.

This was both mine and Bryan’s first time carving a pumpkin so we really had no clue as to what we were doing. When he got home from work and I informed him that we would be doing this later in the evening he asked if I got a stencil for it or some type of kit. I was shocked, “what they have kits for this”…no wonder why people can do things like this…

by Deacon's uncle Derrick

and these are done by his cousins Cayden and McGwire, who is 7 and 5.

So, if you are laughing at our sad little jack-o-lantern (and I know you are) that’s okay, because now I know that there is an easier way to go about this than free handing it. We will buy a kit next year. We live and we learn!

At the end of the night we put the pumpkins outside so everyone could see our masterpieces. However, there was one little glitch…the paint I got was easy wash off paint. Yes that is right, as soon as it rained (and it is doing that a lot lately) all the paint came off the pumpkin. So guess what…we will probably try this again this weekend.

It's a Halloween Party
Saturday the Yazwinski's arrived for the Baker's Halloween party. They came early so the guys could watch the game, but we aren't going to talk about that.

Once we got Deacon and Stella dressed for the party they weren’t sure what to think of each other.

The first picture we took of them Deacon’s tail ended up in the wrong place…it was so funny to the parents but they of course didn’t know what all the laughter was about.

One day when they are older they will be mad at us for these pictures, but they look so cute!

We had so much fun at the party. It was great to see all of the kiddos dressed up. And no we did not get a big group picture of all the kids in their costumes…we wanted to but 10 kids in costumes all sitting still at the same time…impossible. Sadly I did not take many pictures, but I know Andrea did and I am sure she will post them (no pressure Andrea, ha!).

Here is Amelia trying to get Deacon’s attention and as always he is ignoring her. Don’t worry Amelia one day he will be chasing after you.

We did manage to take some pictures outside where Andrea had all of her fall decorations.

Deacon wanted to run all around the yard and was not in the mood for us to take pictures with him…but we tried.

Here I am trying to teach Deacon to be a gentleman and help Stella up, ha.

I have to say Andrea is the “Hostess with the Mostess” seriously she went all out. No one will ever be able to outdo her at the party planning. Thanks again for putting on a great Halloween party.

Backyard Fun
All day Friday Deacon wanted to go outside and play and that afternoon I finally gave in. He loves running all round the back yard. He was so cute I had to grab the camera and snap some pictures of him. I am not a very good photographer, but I think I got some cute ones, but then again I always think his pictures are cute.

Here are some of my favorites...

Stella's Coming to Visit
Guess who decided he wanted to get up at 4:30 this morning…

Yes that would be who.

We are hoping to go the pumpkin patch today, but it is a little cold, so we may have to wait until next weekend. Deacon wanted to go outside and play today so we may have to bundle up this afternoon and head outside for a little bit.

Today I told Deacon that his friend Stella was coming to visit tomorrow and first he said what…

Then he got excited…

Because he remembered he would have his bat to defend himself…

Then he said just kidding Stella.

We have a fun weekend with friends planned and can’t wait to see all the kids dressed up in their Halloween costumes.
