Give a man a fish...Teach a man to fish
Bryan has hijacked the blog...I remember the days when I slept till noon, played till 4pm and worked till 2am. I recently had a flash-back 4 years in my life; a time when I worked in a factory, wondering how in the world do people need this many fuel pumps; a time when I either went fishing or golfing everyday; and a time when I thought "I can't do this the rest of my life"...
When a good friend (we'll call him Lyle) recently revealed to me his goals for the summer, I thought...There is no one better to sacrifice their own well-being for another man's dream..."Become a decent fisherman, and consistently shoot 80".
I agreed to join him in the 3 month adventure. Our plan was to start with the greater of the two challenges...Fishing. Neither of us had the slightest bit of fishing equipment, but Lyle quickly knocked over that hurdle (I know the point is to jump OVER a hurdle, but he really didn't exert any physical effort, so I feel the comparison is valid) by revealing he had access to fishing equipment and knowledge, similar to the way Steve Jobs has access to iPhones.
In the times we have been fishing together (4 weeks), the current fish count is 9 (me) to 1 (Lyle)...So I'm at a point where I decide, do I give the man a fish, or keep teaching? He's getting really hungry.
You see, while I'm helping this 24 year old boy become a 24 year old man, I'm simply preparing for the days when I'll be helping my own boy to reach the same goals "become a decent fisherman and consistently shoot 80", the only difference is the age will be 8 instead of 24.
